On a cold and snowy morning, our class toured our local landfill to see where all of our community trash ends up! We were surprised to see a very large hill that is buried trash! The hill was actually a 40 foot hole in the year 2006- that is amazing! We learned that the landfill converts some of the trash into electricity and could even produce more electricity with another converter. The electricity it currently produces powers over 2000 homes! We also saw the recycling area and an area where tires, clothes, computers and other recyclables are collected.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
We had a lot of fun with our Great Lunchbox Challenge! Students were challenged to pack a snack or lunch from home that did not create any trash. We talked about how even if just one item is packed in a reusable container, you are making an important difference. The students were so proud to share their packed lunches and snacks!
What can you make with junk mail? why, beads, of course! We measured and cut out triangle shapes from donated junk mail and turned them into gorgeous beads! It is fun to recycle!
