Our math focus has been on adding and subtracting numbers with efficiency. We are using our 100 charts and playing many math games to reinforce common patterns that occur as we add and subtract.

How many drops of water can fit on a penny?

How many drops of water can fit on a penny?
Children loved experimenting with water drops on a penny and we learned a little about cohesion: water molecules love to stick together! Some of us dropped 32 droplets of water on a single penny before it spilled over!

Literacy

Literacy
A comprehension strategy we have been focusing on is retell. We read many versions of "The Three Little Pigs" and then retold the story in small groups, making sure to include characters, setting, sequence of events and conclusion.

Math

Math
Our latest focus is on odd and even numbers. Students are learning why certain numbers are considered equal and others are not!

Poetry

Poetry
Our Writer's Workshop is all about Poetry! We are learning to use our "poet's eyes" and add "music" to our poems. For one activity, we looked at ordinary objects, such as scissors, and used our "poet's eyes" to describe them in extraordinary ways.

Adding Music to our Poems

Adding Music to our Poems
Adding music means using "line breaks" in purposeful ways in our poetry writing. We practiced using line breaks with a poem called Fireworks. What a difference was made as we worked together putting music into the poem!

Making Ice-cream
For our final "Dairy in the Classroom", Dana taught us how to make ice-cream! We churned and rolled until we had scrumptious vanilla and chocolate ice-cream to eat!

Weekly News

Weekly News
We write a bit of news every week to share with our family. You may have learned about our "green screen" video we are working on. This project has been a part of our community theme as we learn about our global community, and regions around the world. A high school student from Harwood named Omar has been helping us with the tech piece. We will keep you posted!

We are teaming with Mrs. Emler's first graders to create our Farmer's Market craft!

Global Research

Global Research
As our community theme expanded from the community we live in to our global community, the children became interested in other areas of our world. This has led to our country research! Each child has picked a country to learn about and will share their learning in a new and exciting way, we will keep you posted!

The children did a great job managing their secret community worker case files! Each group of students was in charge of creating a poster about their secret community worker. They drew and wrote clues about how their community worker worked for the common good. We then took turns drawing conclusions based on each others clues.

Writer's Notebooks!
Were we excited to get our new Writer's Notebooks! We are writing "small moment" stories. These stories are true stories that happened and we tell them in meaningful ways. We are collecting our small moment story ideas in our "Tiny Topic Notepads". The children are so excited for Writer's Workshop every day!

Awesome Adjectives

Awesome Adjectives
We have been using adjectives to describe so many things...even ourselves!

Librarian/Quilt Expert!
Mrs. Daigle shared her beautiful art of quilting with us. We were so inspired by her quilts- the lovely patterns and designs!

Traditional Designs

Traditional Designs
We focused on six traditional quilt designs that were invented a long time ago. We loved learning their names such as Evening Star, Shoo-Fly, and Birds in the Air. All of the designs can be made with small triangles or squares.

A Quilt Sandwich

A Quilt Sandwich
Mrs. Palermo showed us how quilters pin together their design before sewing it together, and it is called a quilt sandwich!

Exploring Color

Exploring Color
We have been exploring color combinations by creating color wheels, locating and recording complimentary colors and choosing favorite color combinations. We then decided, by means of a graph, which complementary pair to use in our next quilt!

Beaks!

Beaks!
We explored, through a simulation activity, how different bird beaks are suited for different food sources. We used 3 different tools as our beaks; an eye dropper, clothespin and fork to represent different kinds of beaks. The children were then challenged to pick up "berries', "insects" and "nectar" using one of the tools. They had to put one hand behind their backs and were timed for 15 seconds!

Geometry

Geometry
In our final Investigations math unit, children are exploring the relationships between 2-D and 3-D shapes. We are describing, building and comparing many shapes including rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders, and cubes. Children have been challenged in a variety of ways- designing, planning and building a variety of structures.

The Shape of Things

After reading "The Shape of Things" children created a class book about shapes!

Young Writers

Young Writers
As we write stories, we are learning how to edit our work so that everyone can read what we are writing about! These editing skills include spaces between words, proper letter formation, use of punctuation, checking our trick words, using our spelling rules, and organizing our thoughts! We are helping each other with these skills by reading each other's work and coaching each other to make our stories even better!

All About Books

All About Books
Our Animal Research Books are complete! We have included many facts about our animals, used "Kidspirartion" to organize our facts on the computer and used "Kidpix" to make diagrams with labels on the computer. We also included headings, bold print, a glossary, a table of contents page and a "Meet the Author" page. This project came together beautifully as children incorporated technology into their research and final products. We are now experts on many animals!! (and non-fiction text features!)

Life Cycles

Life Cycles
We are beginning our study of Life Cycles. In our classroom, we are learning first hand about the life cycle of a chick. Our incubator is filled with 18 eggs that we will care for over the next few weeks! We began with an exploration of unfertilized eggs, using magnifying glasses to located different parts of the egg.

Weekly News

Weekly News
Students continue to write weekly news letters home in our journals every Friday. Families are encouraged to write a short note back as we share responses to our writing every week.

Author Study

Author Study
We are reading many non fiction books by Gail Gibbons. We are inspired by her artwork and depth of information she includes in her research.

Just the Facts!

Just the Facts!

Working Together

Working Together
Our theme time has been so much fun with Ms. Judy! She has been with our class for the week as we learn about Social Thinking. Social Thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions.

Cooperation

Geomety

Students worked in pairs sorting a variety of shapes into groups based on common attributes.

Adventure Play

One component of our weekly routine is Adventure Play. These games and activities invite children to challenge themselves, practice cooperation, provide opportunities to practice decision making skills, and build upon our classroom community skills.
One of our favorites is called "Car and Driver" where children are encouraged to participate in "challenge by choice". One child is the "car", and may close their eyes for the "challenge", but may open their eyes at any time "by choice". What fun it is to "drive" our "cars" around our classroom!

Math Game: Compare

Math Game: Compare
"In this first number unit in Grade 1, students count, order, compare quantities, and work with the operation of addition. Students also work on finding addition combinations up to 10 and learn to make sense of and solve story problems. They are introduced to several of the classroom routines that practice and reinforce work with counting, developing visual images of number, collecting data, and working with concepts of time (calendar/clock)." - Investigations Unit Summary

Cooperative Games

Cooperative Games
As we develop our sense of community and belonging in our classroom, we have played and worked together in partnerships and small groups developing our class rules. We have settled on three ways to be in our class; Kind, Safe and Gentle!

High 5 Buddies

High 5 Buddies
A fun way to partner up is with a "High Five Buddy"! We also have "Bump Firework Buddies" and "Color Buddies"!

Group Processing

Group Processing
We love to discuss how a game or activity went; Did we all feel safe? Were we all treated kindly?, Were our bodies safe and gentle? We use a special deck of cards with really cool pictures to help us talk about our thoughts and feelings!

Addition, Subtraction and the Number System

Addition, Subtraction and the Number System
Thinking flexibly about numbers is fundamental to developing number sense. Just as we use familiar landmarks to find our way around, we also use familar numbers such as multiples of ten as landmarks in the number system. Partner games such as "Roll a Square" and "Guess my Number" help students develop fluency with the sequence of number, find and use number patterns and see relationships of numbers.
