Our Field Trip to Grenier's Farm

Exploring the pumpkin field and the corn field! We picked out our own pumpkins- average weight was 20 lbs!!!! And, we were treated to delicious cider and cookies! A huge thank you to the Grenier's for opening their farm to us!

Please come to our classroom to pick up your child's pumpkin- they are too big for the bus!

Community- Where We Belong!

Today, we finished our "Community Pockets".  We began this project by drawing a small picture of ourselves. Next, we made a pocket picture of our house, followed by a larger pocket picture of our neighborhood, then an even larger pocket picture of our town, state, country, continents/earth and lastly, a giant pocket of space! This project helped us to understand how each community "fits" in to the next- a great visual!!

Community Field Trip

 What an awesome day!

We began at Owl's Head Apple Orchard where Farmer Jodi and Will taught us all about apples!

We helped to prepare the apples for sauce and cider and we pressed the apples and enjoyed the freshest most delicious cider! Thank you Owl's Head Orchard!!

Next, we went to Rosina's Dairy Farm! We spent our time in the cow barn where we met many cows! Rosina answered all of our questions and showed us how to milk a cow!

From Rosina's barn to Stonyfield Farms!

Listening to a soon-to-be-born calf!

On to Grow Compost! Here we learned how compost is made...and nature takes care of it all! We learned that inside the compost the temperature can reach 140' F! Those microbes sure generate a ton of heat!

Science Inquiry:
How do you grow a dinosaur?
Second grade students focused on observation, prediction, and data collection during our "Grow a Dinosaur" experiment!

What is a scientist? Second grade students had a ton of fun exploring a slimy substance called "oobleck".  Students were challenged when asked if this was a solid or liquid- we discovered that sometimes oobleck acts like a solid, and sometime a liquid. The scientific term for this is called a "dilatant".  If you would like to make oobleck at home, all you need is cornstarch and water. Basically the ratio is 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water. Have fun (and best done outside!!)
